Before the battle, Constantine said he saw a cross of light above the sun. So the historian Eusebius recorded from the emperor's own telling: about noon, the cross appeared in the heavens bearing the words “Conquer by this” — in Latin, In hoc signo vinces. On October 28, 312, Constantine won at the Milvian Bridge, and early the next year the Edict of Milan gave Christians and all others “freedom in the exercise of religion.”
On the back: a gold cross blazing with light, rising from engraved clouds beneath a banner reading “In Hoc Signo Vinces,” with the English below: “In this sign thou shalt conquer.” On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand.
