Memento Mori — Remember You Must Die
Two words the Church has pressed on her saints for two thousand years: memento mori. Remember you will die. The skull beneath this cross was once a man — with plans, with time he thought he had, with a list of things he'd get to later. The hourglass beside it is still running. But look what stands over them both: the Cross, blazing. This back-print sets the oldest meditation in Christendom against its only answer — death is certain, and Christ has already conquered it. Marked, as always, 1765.
Keep Death Daily Before Your Eyes
This isn't morbid. It's the clearest thing a man can do. St. Benedict told his monks to keep death daily before their eyes — not to frighten them, but to wake them up. Every Ash Wednesday the Church says it plainly: remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return. A man who truly remembers he will die stops spending his life on what won't follow him into the ground. He prays like it matters. He loves like there's a clock. And he fixes his eyes on the one Cross that turns the grave from a dead end into a door. The skull is the warning. The Cross is the way through.
Learn the meaning: What does Memento Mori mean — and why do Christians wear it?

The History Behind the Mark
Two words the Church has repeated for two thousand years: memento mori — remember you must die. It is not a morbid slogan but a spiritual discipline. St. Benedict told his monks in the sixth century to “keep death daily before your eyes.” The Desert Fathers kept it as a rule of prayer, and Carthusian and Trappist monks have lived by it for centuries. Every year on Ash Wednesday the whole Church says it aloud over each forehead: Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
The skull and hourglass in this mark are the oldest symbols of that meditation — held by saints in a hundred paintings, carved into monastery walls, set on the desks of men who wanted to spend their days well. But the Cross blazing above them is the answer the world never had: death is certain, and Christ has already conquered it. The skull is the warning. The Cross is the way through.
Asked Straight
Isn't a skull morbid for a Christian to wear?
Just the opposite. Memento mori is one of the oldest disciplines in the Church — St. Benedict told his monks to keep death daily before their eyes, and every Ash Wednesday the Church says it over each of us. Remembering you will die is how a man stops wasting his life and fixes his eyes on the Cross that turns the grave into a door. The skull is the warning; the Cross above it is the hope.
How does the Bayside 5100 fit and feel?
Substantial. A true 6.1 oz, 100% pre-shrunk U.S.-grown cotton heavyweight — closer to old military issue than the thin drapey tees you're used to, with shoulder-to-shoulder taping and double-needle hems. It's pre-shrunk, so order your usual size; size up if you want a relaxed drape.
Is it really made in America?
Dirt to shirt. The cotton is grown in the U.S., knit, dyed, cut, and sewn in the USA by Bayside, then printed to order stateside before it ships to your door.
