The Story Behind the Shirt
A Yorkshire curate sat up one night to write children a marching song. Sabine Baring-Gould, an Anglican clergyman at Horbury Bridge, wanted his school children to sing as they marched to a neighboring village for a Whitsuntide procession. He wrote it “in great haste” and titled it a hymn for “Procession with Cross and Banners”; nothing, he said, surprised him more than its popularity. The standard at the front was a cross — the one every Christian still marches under.
On the back: a processional cross in fine engraving, its arms ending in trefoils, a white-and-red banner wound about it, gold rays breaking behind, over “ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS” and “MARCHING AS TO WAR.” On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand.
