The Story Behind the Shirt
In the storm, St. Bernard said, look to the star and call on Mary. With the hymn Ave Maris Stella, composed in the eighth or ninth century, the Church has greeted the Mother of God as Star of the Sea for more than a thousand years. Pope Benedict XVI called life “a voyage on the sea of history, often dark and stormy, a voyage in which we watch for the stars that indicate the route.” Bernard of Clairvaux's advice still holds: look up.
On the back: an eight-pointed star in fine engraving, blazing over rolling waves of navy and red, a tall ship under sail on the horizon below, over “STELLA MARIS” and “STAR OF THE SEA.” On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand.
