Aquinas wrote it for Corpus Christi. Seven centuries later, the Church still sings it. Pope Urban IV ordered the whole Church to keep the feast in 1264, and St. Thomas Aquinas wrote the hymn Pange Lingua for its Office. Its last stanza and doxology, Tantum ergo Sacramentum, are sung at Benediction, before the Blessed Sacrament, where the Church teaches Christ is “truly, really, and substantially” present. Few words, every one of them true.
