The Story Behind the Shirt
Tradition says the first Continental Marines signed on at a Philadelphia tavern. On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of Marines. Samuel Nicholas, commissioned Captain of Marines that November 28, turned to his friend Robert Mullan, co-proprietor of Tun Tavern, to help find the men, and tradition holds the recruiting began under its roof. Marines still keep November 10 as their birthday.
On the back: a tavern sign on an iron bracket, with a great cask (a tun) on its stand, a lantern at one side and a drum and sticks at the other, under “TUN TAVERN,” with “PHILADELPHIA · NOVEMBER 10, 1775” and “THE FIRST MUSTER” below. On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand. More patriotic shirts made in the USA.
