The Story Behind the Shirt

With Your Shield, Or On It — A Co.

It was the hardest thing a Spartan mother ever said to her son. As he marched out, she handed him his shield with five words: with your shield — or on it. Come home carrying it, victorious. Or come home carried on it, dead. Never without it. Never in shame. This back-print stamps that creed onto an American war seal — a Spartan shield marked with the lambda and dressed in the stars and stripes, crossed muskets behind it, flanked by 1765 and A Co.

The Shield Is a Covenant

In the phalanx, your shield never just guarded you — it guarded the man on your left. Throw it down and run, and you didn't only save yourself; you left your brother open to die. That's why coming home without it was the one unforgivable thing. So the shield is a covenant: I will not break the line. I will not leave you exposed. I come home with honor or not at all. Twenty-five centuries later the charge hasn't changed — only the number of men still willing to carry it.

The History Behind the Mark

The line survives because Plutarch wrote it down, centuries after the fact, in his Sayings of Spartan Women: a mother hands her son his shield with the order "Either this, or upon this." Victors carried the aspis home. The dead were carried home on it. And there was a third way out — the Greeks kept a word of contempt for it, rhipsaspis, the shield-flinger, because the first thing a man did when he ran was drop the heavy round of wood and bronze slowing him down.

Why the shield and not the rest of the armor? A Spartan king answered that one. Asked why Sparta disgraced the man who lost his shield but not the man who lost his helmet or breastplate, Demaratus said: "Because these they put on for their own sake, but the shield for the common good of the whole line." Your breastplate covered you. Your shield covered the man fighting at your left. By the late fifth century B.C., Spartan shields carried a single letter — lambda, for Lakedaimon — the city's initial, not the soldier's.

That is what stands behind this mark — the lambda set against the stars and crossed muskets of another citizen army — because the shield was never about the man carrying it, and it still isn't.

Asked Straight

Where does "with your shield or on it" actually come from?

Plutarch's Sayings of Spartan Women, where a mother arms her son with the words "Either this, or upon this" — come home carrying the shield in victory, or carried home dead on it. Throwing it away to run was the one disgrace Sparta wouldn't pardon. The lambda on the shield is the initial of Lakedaimon, the Spartans' own name for their homeland.

What does a 6.1 oz heavyweight tee actually feel like?

Substantial. The Bayside 5100 is 6.1 ounces of 100% pre-shrunk American cotton — real weight through the chest and shoulders, none of the tissue-paper drape of a fashion tee. Classic fit, true to size, and it breaks in better the longer you own it; if you want a looser hang, go up one.

Is this really made in America, or just printed here?

Dirt to shirt. The cotton is grown in the United States, the Bayside 5100 blank is knit, cut, and sewn in the U.S.A., and the mark is printed stateside before it ships. An imported shirt with a flag on it would be a strange way to run this brand.
