The Story Behind the Shirt
They dug the fort overnight — and held it until the powder ran out. Around midnight on June 16, 1775, colonial militia with picks and shovels threw up an earthen redoubt on Breed's Hill. Tradition credits Col. William Prescott — some say Gen. Israel Putnam — with the order on this shirt. The next afternoon the militia threw back two British assaults before the powder gave out. The hill fell, but it cost the British 1,054 casualties and proved Americans would stand.
On the back: "BUNKER HILL · JUNE 17, 1775" over an engraved scene of militiamen in tricorns kneeling at a log breastwork, muskets leveled off to the side, with "DON'T FIRE UNTIL YOU SEE THE WHITES OF THEIR EYES" below. On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand.
