Winter 1777. The army is starving, freezing, and losing. And the tradition the soldiers passed down is not of a general raging — but of a general on his knees in the snow. The Prayer at Valley Forge is the image of American leadership at its lowest hour: when nothing earthly was left, Washington took it to God. By spring, the army that shouldn't have survived marched out and won.
