His own guns had burst and his ship was flooding. He would not strike. September 23, 1779, off Flamborough Head on the Yorkshire coast: Captain John Paul Jones lashed Bonhomme Richard to HMS Serapis and fought her into the night. When the British called across, "Has your ship struck?" Jones is reported to have answered: "I have not yet begun to fight!" After some four hours, it was Serapis that surrendered. His exact words are disputed. The refusal is not.
On the back: "I HAVE NOT YET BEGUN TO FIGHT" arched over an engraved warship under shot-torn sail, wreathed in cannon smoke above heavy seas, with "JOHN PAUL JONES · 1779" below. On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand. More from the America 250 collection.
