The Story Behind the Shirt
A church sexton climbed his steeple in the dark with two lanterns. It was April 18, 1775, and Robert Newman and vestryman John Pulling Jr. were hanging Paul Revere's signal for the Patriots in Charlestown: the British were leaving Boston by water. The next day British troops jailed Newman; Pulling had fled. In 1860 Longfellow gave the signal its line: "One, if by land, and two, if by sea."
On the back: the Old North steeple under a crescent moon, two lanterns burning in its tower, and a rider at full gallop on the road below, with "One if by land, two if by sea" arched overhead and "Old North Church · April 18, 1775" beneath. On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand. More in America 250.
