The Story Behind the Shirt
Three founders drew up a seal. Congress tabled it, but kept the motto. Hours after adopting the Declaration on July 4, 1776, Congress named Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams to design a national seal. One feature of their work lived on in the seal Congress approved on June 20, 1782: E Pluribus Unum, “Out of Many, One.” The number thirteen, for the original states, runs through that seal: its arrows, its stars, the stripes of its shield.
On the back: an engraved eagle, wings spread against a burst of light, gripping a shield of thirteen stripes, an olive branch at its side, over a banner reading “E Pluribus Unum,” with “Out of Many, One” beneath. On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand.
