The Story Behind the Shirt
The verse came first. The name "Liberty Bell" came 82 years later. Ordered in 1751 for the Pennsylvania State House, now Independence Hall, the bell cracked on its first test ring and was recast in Philadelphia in 1753 by John Pass and John Stow. It carries Leviticus 25:10, the command for the jubilee, the fiftieth year. In 1835 an abolitionist paper first called it the Liberty Bell.
On the back: the Liberty Bell, crack and wooden yoke and all, engraved against a burst of gold rays, with "PROCLAIM LIBERTY" on a red ribbon above "THROUGHOUT ALL THE LAND" and the reference, Leviticus 25:10.
