The Story Behind the Shirt
August 14, 1765. Boston woke to an effigy hanging from an elm. The effigy was of Andrew Oliver, appointed to collect the new stamp tax; by December he had resigned, publicly, beneath the same tree. The elm on Orange Street became the Liberty Tree, a meeting place for the Sons of Liberty; when the Stamp Act was repealed in 1766, Boston hung its branches with lanterns. British soldiers cut it down in 1775, but what it stood for, they could not.
On the back: the great elm in fine engraving, a lit lantern hanging from a low branch, above a banner reading “The Liberty Tree” and “Boston 1765.” On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand. More America 250 designs.
