The Story Behind the Shirt
The first time a colonial officer ordered his men to fire on British soldiers. On the morning of April 19, 1775, smoke rose over Concord, and more than 400 minutemen and militia marched on the North Bridge. When the regulars fired and a young fifer cried out that he was wounded, Major John Buttrick gave the order: "Fire! For God's sake fire!" Sixty-two years later, Ralph Waldo Emerson gave the moment its name: "the shot heard round the world."
On the back: a timber footbridge arched over a quiet stream, a bare tree beside it, in fine engraving above "THE SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD" and "CONCORD 1775." On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand. More from our America 250 collection.
