The Story Behind the Shirt
Widowed with five children, she became Catholic whatever it cost her. Born in New York City in 1774, Elizabeth Ann Seton lost her husband in Italy in 1803 and entered the Catholic Church in 1805, despite the personal and financial cost. In 1809 she and her companions founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's in Emmitsburg, Maryland, the first community of religious women founded in the United States, and in 1810 a free school for girls. Canonized in 1975, she is America's first native-born saint.
