The Story Behind the Shirt
December 1531: a humble man opened his cloak, and roses fell out. By Juan Diego's account, the Virgin Mary appeared to him on Tepeyac hill, and the bishop asked for a sign. When the flowers fell from his tilma, an image of Our Lady remained on the cloth, still venerated today in Mexico City. St. John Paul II, who canonized Juan Diego there in 2002, called her the Patroness of all America.
On the back: Our Lady of Guadalupe in fine engraving, head bowed and hands joined, her mantle strewn with stars, a crescent moon at her feet and rays of light all around, above the banner “Patroness of the Americas” and “Guadalupe 1531.” On the chest: the original 1765 A Co. mark in our founder's own hand.
