The Story Behind the Shirt
He could have escaped at Unsan. He stayed with the wounded. Fr. Emil Kapaun, a Kansas priest and Army chaplain, said Mass on the battlefield from the hood of a jeep. Captured on November 2, 1950, he spent his last months in prison camps stealing food for starving men, caring for the sick and leading forbidden prayers. He died at Pyoktong on May 23, 1951. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2013, and Pope Francis declared him Venerable in 2025.
